Induction and Orientation to the workplace
All Nursing Australia members will receive induction to our Safety Management System and key OHS issues such as manual handling during the recruitment process. Our induction process is also competency based to ensure that our members have a good understanding of safety issues which may impact on their health and wellbeing in the workplace.
It is essential that members are given an induction or orientation to the client facility prior to the commencement of their first shift. Induction into a client facility is imperative as it provides members with client specific information such as site policies and procedures, specific job requirements as well as emergency procedures. This information will help members to perform their duties safely.
It is expected that all Nursing Australia members will receive an induction. If this does not occur, it is essential that contact be made with Nursing Australia immediately.
Induction should, at minimum, cover the following topics;
- Client specific Health and Safety policies, procedures and safe work procedures.
- Emergency procedures including evacuation procedures.
- Manual handling policies and procedures including the location and use of manual handling equipment.
- Hazard and incident reporting procedures.
- Location of Care Plans or individual patient/resident plans.
- Security arrangements (particularly when working after hours).
- Location of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Amenities.
Nursing Australia has the following tools available to members and clients to facilitate the induction process.
- Induction Checklist card – attached to member name badges, this card outlines aspects of the workplace that members should familiarise themselves with at the commencement of a shift at a client site.
- Site Orientation Checklist/Induction checklists – Nursing Australia has various induction checklists available which can be provided to clients and members on request.
